Expert Framing Techniques

Matting Your Art

A mat creates separation between art & frame to draw your gaze directly to the subject.

  1. Attach 2 pieces of tape to the top/ back of art – STICKY SIDE UP.
  2. Put the art face up on a table. Then, place the mat on top of the art & apply pressure with your palms.
  3. Slowly turn the mat over with your art attached. Seal tape with finger. You’re done!

⚠️ Never remove the glass as it will not be possible to fit back in correctly.

Floating Your Art

Highlight the entire piece & call attention to deckled or intricate edges.

  1. Attach 2 pieces of rolled tape to the back of your art.
  2. Place on top of the mat (or colored fabric/ paper) & apply pressure with palms.
  3. Place into the frame, bend down the black flex tabs & you’re done!

⚠️ Never remove the glass as it will not be possible to fit back in correctly.

Cropping & Trimming Your Art

Show just what you want in the mat window & simply trim or crop the paper.

  1. Trim art to fit in mat window or full frame.
  2. Crop art to show just the desired portion inside mat window.
  3. See “Matting Art” above & proceed.

⚠️ Never remove the glass as it will not be possible to fit back in correctly.

Framing Your Art Edge to Edge

Discard the mat and place your art directly into the frame.

  1. Trim your art, if needed, to fit tightly inside the frame.
  2. Place art on glass with foam core behind it.
  3. Bend down back flex tabs. You’re done!

⚠️ Never remove the glass as it will not be possible to fit back in correctly.

Fitting Your Art

⚠️  Never remove the glass in your frame as it will not be possible to fit the glass back in correctly.

Here’s how to secure the art, mat and foam core into the frame.

  1. On a towel, place frame face down on a table. Bend up flex tabs.
  2. Remove foam core & mat. Clean & dry glass.
  3. Place art, mat and foam core back into frame.
  4. Bend down flex tabs. You’re done!

Hanging a Picture or Gallery

  1. The frame or gallery’s center point should be at eye level (about 58” off the floor).
  2. Hang the “middle” frame first – then work your way left, right, up, and down, until your entire gallery is hung.
  3. Allow 2” between each frame. Step back and admire your work!
